This church has a great reputation in the community. I did not have a great experience. A couple of tips:
Greeters: don't embarrass somebody who's coming in late by running up to them and demanding if they have ever been there before. What if you have seen them and don't recognize them and they are just really sick and they already feel bad and they're not going to tell you because you have put them on the spot because it would embarrass you and make you feel bad?
Greeters: do not physically grab somebody's forearm while you speak to them. You have no idea if they can tolerate being touched and you are an adult and you have better manners. Don't tell me that this is your culture; you're in Alaska and we respect space. (If you are worried about people who should not receive communion getting communion, most non-catholics blanche when they see the communal cup for the Most Precious Blood. You don't need to chase them down and tackle them.)
Suggest to the ushers that they rope off a few pews to seat people who arrive later. This church is no exception to people being how they are: they will fight for the aisle seats, fuggedabout sitting in the middle!!!!! For some people it is very uncomfortable even if an usher asks on their behalf for them to either stand up or let latecomers scooch past them. Sometimes, people are late not because they are lazy but because it took a small miracle and determination for them to even go to church in the first place. They need to be allowed to sit down quietly or stand in the back quietly and just soak in the beauty and the presence of the Lord. If you reserve a couple of pews, you won't have to interrupt people who are worshipping so that others can get to seats.
The sound in this church is good, the priest is easily heard and he has a good voice. There are all kinds of groups available for those who wish to participate-- I saw bulletin boards and flyers out for groups for which they seem to have a ton of stuff going on. I will personally not be going back, my experience was not that great and I felt awkward, but I know of a few people who love it. Go and check it out and if it's not for you, there are churches in both Anchorage as well as the Mat-Su.Added August 21, 2016 by Iris G
